Uniscan's SMART AWARD Hat-Trick
The Smart achievement award winners all won government research grant awards prior to 1997, and have used those original awards to develop processes or products that have led to improved competitiveness and significant business success.
The award was presented to Uniscan's Managing Director, Dr. Graham Johnson by Sir Robert May, FRS, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government and Head of the Office of Science and Technology.
"The Smart Awards helped Uniscan to bring innovative ideas through to new products which enable us to compete successfully in global markets for high-technology instruments" explains Graham.
Uniscan have pioneered the development of a special technique for measuring and evaluating corrosion of materials which is now being used by high profile companies around the globe.
"The company was originally formed by my father as an importer of scientific instruments, but the successful re-engineering of the company as a new product developer has helped us become a net exporter" says Graham. Uniscan now count prestigious clients such as NASA, British Aerospace, Seiko and Bosch amongst its customers.
In the last two years, the company has doubled its turnover and spent in excess of 30% of that on research and development. Uniscan also sponsors research locally at the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield.
